Evolve : to come forth gradually into being. From the Latin “evolvere”: to unroll, open out, unfold. Evolution originally was used in reference to an unrolling of a book. To this end we bring you an unrolling and opening of a new journal: Toward the Light: Journal of Reflective Word & Image

Toward the Light has evolved over the past four years from a poetry contest and concert in Calgary, Alberta to a Canada-wide poetry and photography contest, concert and anthology in 2006. Now the wheel is turning once more and Toward the Light is evolving into a bi-annual print journal.

We see the journal as a container and a messenger for reflective word and image - a collection by and for the reflective, thoughtful individual who plays with word and image attempting to integrate the power of light and dark in a life lived consciously. Glimpse with us into the roots of human feelings and reactions, discern the light, shadow and darkness that shape our lives--reflect.

Within you will find writing that sees in the dark. Photography – light writing – that illuminates. Each of us sees a unique reflection--we are all richer for experiencing multiple reflections.

Reflect.

Why “Toward the Light”?
Some thoughts :

Staying in either the light or the dark too long, we stagnate.  Neither is a permanent resting place, rather together they stimulate movement and growth; never a final location.

The movement comes out of darkness. Not that the dark is opposite or negative. The dark is where things begin, where they rest before germinating and eventually moving toward the light.

Shimmers of insight into unknowing opens eyes and hearts.

Dark is about the unknown, what we don’t know or what we think we don’t know.

The dark lacks light. It is not something to run away from but to admit we sit in from time to time. The dark allows us to be still if we pay attention to its fabric.

Wherever you are, ignite the fuse of light within you. Notice how darkness can make you wise.

What is it that makes the dark? It can be when our eyes are shut, it can be when our hearts or minds are shut.

In celebration, struggle, joy, depression, transition, achievement there is light and dark.

The dark can be a frightening place. As we feel our way through the dark, there is an opening and through the opening comes light.

The dark never leaves. It is part of us. It can be a place of nurture, incubation, of potential growth.

The dark is not a solid rock of a thing. It is fluid and weaves it’s way through our lives. photo by d.l.clay

We start in darkness and end in darkness.

We carry a light in us.
