Contest Winners

Meet the winners of the 2008 Toward the Light poetry and photography contests.

Interview

A conversation with writer Susan Musgrave who has published 25 books: she is a poet, novelist, children's writer, essayist, columnist and frequent guest on the C.B.C. Susan has been described as everything from a standup comedian to an eco-feminist. She lives on Vancouver Island and on the Queen Charlottes/Haida Gwaii.

Susan has been nominated, and has received awards, in six different categories of writing: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, personal essay, children's writing and for her work as an editor. See more at www.susanmusgrave.com

Ocean Lover, a collaboration of poetry and photography by Celeste Snowber and Gary Nylander exploring the inner and outer landscapes of the natural world.

Poetry

Cheryl Hicks of Athens, Texas explores the theme of "bloom where you are planted" from unusual perspectives.

Anjie Greene-Martin of Palmyra, Wisconsin helps us hear sounds where we don't expect them.

Ray Succre of Coos Bay, Oregon captures the essence of particular moments.

Susan Unger of Calgary, Alberta, this year's poetry judge, describes how bizarre poets seem to others.

Mary Jo Balistreri of Waukesha, Wisconsin gives us a collection of seven sonnets written in memory of her grandsons.

Susan Musgrave of Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlottes

Life Spark

Mary Jo Balistreri processes her grief through the use of poetry.

Toward the LIght has been supporting individuals engaged in the expressive arts for the past four and a half years. The initial concept has developed into a literary journal plus! and its focus is to encourage emerging and established creatives to continue to look beyond clichés of dark and light: Toward The Light offers a place to:

Be published

Here is a beautiful place to submit your work for consideration and to complete your creation cycle. imagine>create>share/connect>imagine

Be inspired

You are not alone. All over the world the expressive arts are changing lives. Toward The Light is a good way to stay connected.

Be reminded

Your artistic expression is unique and vital to your well being and the well being of your community however individual or expansive that may be.

Be nourished

Whether you are a creator and/or a patron of the arts you have experienced the connection with “something bigger than the art” perhaps an innate artistic archetype that in turn opens your expressive creativity.

As every subscription comes in, Deb and I are tempted to increase the print run but we remind each other that we are simply two women with an invincible belief that the voice for the light, as expressed through the arts, needs to be heard now more than ever. We are not connected to nor sponsored nor financially supported by any organization or government grant. Such connections can sometimes confuse the light.

Deb and I simply trust that this vital voice will find listeners who also believe in the power of the light. We hope you are one of them and will, through your submissions and subscriptions, support the spread of this voice. In the five years Toward The Light has been growing we have found that to be true.

We hope you will join us to raise this voice for the arts and for light around the world. By doing so you will also be encouraged to continue your creative expression.

How are you going to respond?

Create. Express. Evolve.

Tell others.

A simple suggestion.

Request one issue of "Toward The Light: Journal of Reflective Word & Image" at $14 CAN. Or a one-year subscription for only $25 CAN. Let it nourish your creative expression. Get a better idea of what we are about. Purchase a surprise subscription for the creative folks you know who could use some encouragement to continue with their projects.

Details and international rates below.

Words are things; and a small drop of ink,
Falling like dew upon a thought, produces
That which makes thousands, perhaps millions, think.

Lord Byron
