What's Inside?
• An interview with writer Rosemary A. Nixon about writing with a focus on short stories.
Rosemary Nixon’s first short story collection, Mostly Country, was shortlisted for the Howard O’Hagen Short Fiction Book of The Year Award. Her second collection, The Cock’s Egg, won the Howard O’Hagan Book of The Year Award. She was the 1996-97 Canadian Writer-in-Residency in the Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Programme at the University of Calgary, Alberta. Rosemary generously welcomed the opportunity to do this interview while simultaneously rewriting her novel, working on a short story collection and doing her Masters Degree through the University of British Columbia. Through her passion for writing this interview became an inspired mini-workshop for writers of all genres. Read it. Read it again.
• An interview with Victoria Gouldthorp about winning a short story contest (and the short story)
Victoria Gouldthorp was the winner of the 2008 Tom Howard/John H. Read Short Story Contest with her story, All Things Considered. I found her in her home state of Wisconsin, USA, deeply committed to family life (a most remarkable husband, three children, and five and a half grandchildren) and writing, writing, writing. Her winning story is included in this issue.
